Clos des Amis loosely translates as “Circle of Friends” or “Enclosure of Friends” and that idea forms the creation of these wines. Just as Ventura County enjoys diverse geography and cultural influences, we are finding Ventura County to also provide a diverse range of messo-climes to grow wine grapes. For the last decade, Winemaker Bruce Freeman has collaborated on the planting of various varietals all over Ventura County.
Clos des Amis sources grapes grown in private vineyards in Camarillo, Ojai, Santa Paula, East Ventura/Saticoy, Newbury Park, Fillmore, and of course our estate vineyard on South Mountain. It takes a village to make a good wine, hence the Clos des Amis friends and family connections.
South Mountain Winery is located up in an orchard off South Mountain Road in Santa Paula, California. We are completely solar powered and source our water from a well. The Winery building itself is made from adobe brick, 14 inches thick, that provides great insulation for the cellar. Here at South Mountain Winery, we produce our wines in an artisanal manner, gently fermenting, then watching them carefully as they finish in barrel. Winemaker Bruce Freeman believes in letting the grape tell its story of flavor and terroir.Up the hill, is our estate vineyard growing: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carignon, and Mouvedre. This vineyard is maintained in as close to an organic manner as possible, using no pesticides, and continues to produce award winning wines.
